keratin and the “f” word. I still say, “YES!”

6.6.11When contemplating a Keratin treatment, it is imperative to understand this is not a straightening treatment. It is a process infused with heat which lays down the cuticular or outer layer of the hairshaft. It “wears off” of the the hair sooner or later depending on how often you wash it and, of course. which products you use.  Shampoos that contain sodium chloride as well as sulfides compromise the bond of the keratin product to the hair.  Similarly, salt water compromises that bond. So, please, don’t go for surfing lessons the next day unless you saturate your freshly “smoothened” hair with a protective water-proof product such as KÉRASTASE’S AQUA-SEAL.

There are several KERATIN treatments available on the market these days, none of which I’ll name in a negative sentence.  For instance, ***** is a product that requires one hour, a service for approximately $100. You can wash it in eight hours and it usually lasts for “four to six weeks,” depending on your hair type and how often you shampoo.   It’s a great alternative for someone who is reluctant to “go all the way” and just wants to try the process without the big bucks or the three to five month commitment.

The real deal and the one I use, lasts three to five months  We use the best available and safest products on the market which are beneficial to our clients and that have longevity. I’ve used the products that require you to refrain from shampooing for seventy-two hours. I have found, not only do they contain a higher Formaldahyde ratio, even after shampooing, the quality of the hair is not clean. It feels heavy and almost slimy like.  No need to wait with the products I use, you may shampoo in twenty-four hours.  I guarantee, there is no slimy residual left in your hair and you enjoy the full effect of the Keratin treatment.

Keratin treatments eradicate FRIZZ.  After a blow dry, even when you walk outside (with a one hundred percent humidity factor) YOUR HAIR WILL NOT FRIZZ! It may kick up a bit, but no “frizzies!!!” Another plus of this product: it won’t take all the body out of your hair.

I’ve been in the industry for thirty years and I’ve benefited from the full spectrum of education, including my share of mistakes and mishaps along the way!

I participate in continuing education classes; I am certified and I’ve been rendering these treatments for over three years now.  I’ve researched the composition and regulations against formaldehyde. Since the the KERATIN treatment hit the market, there’s been a smoking gun of controversy, understandably.  Any product that can preserve and maintain a certain quality with longevity will contain formaldehyde or a dirivitive of formaldehyde.  I feel confident as a professional, using precautions and application procedures that help to mitigate these concerns.  I will tell you that the product I use contains .02% (formaldehyde)  The whole blaze began when a particular company, vehemently denied a formaldehyde content and it was the competition blowing the whistle on each other.  We are aware of the concerns, and of course, as with using any chemical, we provide the proper protection and, of course, product knowledge.

Also, important and often overlooked, is the attention to detail in the application, which sets me, as well as some of my colleagues apart from the proprietors who are continuously trying to lure potential clients in for a better “DEAL.”

I have repaired dozens of “home jobs” and other (quality!?) salon mistakes because some of our clients went to an inexperienced practitioner who either over/under saturated the hair, or singed the hair with a flat-iron by one hundred degrees too hot for any individual!  When contemplating a Keratin treatment, what matters is experience, creative ability and education, protection and product knowlege.

I understand that there’s always a better “deal” out there but I also know that while the competition may lower their prices, they also lower their standards! I prefer”quality” because I think YOU are worth it.
