you can have it all for fall

8.6.11I know you’re probably not ready for this, but its everywhere…seeping into the crevices of our of our closets from our storage bins, and undeniably in the boutiques we frequent and in the magazines we scour for WHAT’S HAPPEN’N!!? And this past weekend, I noticed that the light has changed, the air smells different.  For me, it is the bittersweet knowledge  of another new year approaching, (Rosh Hashanah) and I welcome this with an embrace of gratitude for all that I love and for what I’ve accomplished and the strength and confidence for that which I will.

What I anticipate for this coming season is so exciting! The trend continues to be forgiving; loose, unstructured in some cases and certainly easy to manage. The “easy to manage” part is what is so exciting because I am confident that I can cut your hair leaving you with that “edge” and perfectly, imperfect polished look, as always, for your hair this fall!

Now ROCK THIS! This is how to achieve it…

1. Wash your hair with a quality shampoo. To know me is to love Kėrastase. Use the appropriate recommendation according to your hair type. Either you may google Kėrastase to obtain that information or let’s talk! Preferably, use a rinse out conditioner (if your hair is super fine, you may omit it, but you’re not completely off the hook!)

2. When you are all clean & pristine, grab your towel and “chiqita bananna” your hair in it. You know, like the Chiqita Bananna lady! Leave it in for 5.minutes or gently squeeze out any excess dripping from your hair. DO NOT RUB it. That will rough up the cuticle, or outer layer of your hair shaft and entice the frizzies!

3. Now, get ready to dry it with a blow dryer. A couple of pointers first though. If you think you’ve got it all figured out by taking off that little nozzle to expedite things, think again!  Turn your dryer on high, look at it. Do you see the red hot coils? Well by taking off the nozzle, you’ve just compromised about three inches of extra protection against singing (frying) your hair. Maybe that’s why you have all those “fly aways!” also, that nozzle is also known as a “concentrator”…it does just that; concentrates the flow of air in a certain direction, which also helps to get it smooth! So put that thing back on, flip your head upside down, and putting your fingers through your hair with some tension to stretch it continue to dry it until it’s about eighty to ninety per cent dry.

4. I love Kėrastase’s new Nectar Thermique a nourishing heat protectant lotion for dry to normal hair.  The “nectar” helps to lay down the cuticle, thus helping to facilitate a  smoother sleeker finish. The problem, however is always the same. These                  products are very pricy.  You really don’t need much. I cringe when I think about how much I’ve seen you put in your hair at the salon. Less, in this case is MORE! When you over use it, it’s a waste and it’ll weigh your hair down, defeating the purpose. And if you are one to resist conditioner because your hair is so fine, omit the conditioner/use this stuff…AMAZING FOR ALL OF US!  I’ll let you in on a little secret.  Even when you request not to use product because you’re concerned about your hair being “too greasy” when you want it to last? I sneak it on the ends.  Otherwise, your hair is so fly-away, I can’t make borscht out of it! Just use a dot!

Squeeze out the equivalence of a large pea ( Lima bean if your hair is uber thick) I like to apply it upside down so as to avoid concentrating in the bang or front area. Section the back of your hair in half across the back of your head around top of the ear height. The wavier your hair is, the bigger the barrel of the brush. My favorite brush is a flat, Mason Pearson. You can make magic with that thing. My kids wouldn’t let me use anything else on them as it doesn’t grab snarls or tangles like every other brush.

When your hair is dry, go over it with your fingers and your hot dryer still using a lot of tension. The oils from your hand an/or any residual from your product will give a nice polish or finishing touch!

The key is to dry your hair almost to ninety per cent.  Truthfully, I think of the hair like a fabric.  You would never take a cotton shirt out of a washing machine and iron it.  Or if you were in a hurry, you wouldn’t soak your man’s shirt before    trying to release a little crease in the collar.  Instead you would ever so slightly dampen it, maybe with Niagara Falls, then iron it!  Similarly, your hair will not begin to respond to the effort you put forth until it is almost dry!  So save your energy, and your arms!

And l’shana tova. Have a Happy, Healthy, Sweet  New year!
